INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As wrestling fans gear up for one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Royal Rumble, a familiar face is reflecting on how the sport has grown and evolved. Legendary wrestler Rob Van Dam, who has spent over 35 years in the business, shared his excitement about the growing wrestling scene and his deep connection with fans during an interview Daybreak.

“There’s a WrestleCon for each major event—WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam,” Van Dam explained, noting that the popularity of wrestling has reached new heights. “It’s huge. It’s everywhere. And to see the impact I’ve had on fans’ lives—how they remember specific matches or moments—it’s humbling.”

Van Dam, WWE Hall of Fame inductee, spoke proudly about receiving the prestigious lifetime achievement ring, a symbol of his extensive career with WWE. “This ring is for my entire career, at least the part with WWE, but I’ve wrestled all over the world, Japan, 22 times, it’s an honor to be recognized for my contributions.”

For Van Dam, connecting with fans has always been a priority. “Even when I was on the road with WWE, traveling 300 days a year, I’d always make time to go out and meet the fans. Whether it was making rounds in the parking lot or engaging with them backstage, I’ve always wanted that connection,” he said. “I was never one to hide in the dressing room. I always volunteered for charity events like Make-A-Wish, because I understood how important those interactions were.”

Van Dam’s wife, Katie, also chimed in, highlighting the energy surrounding Van Dam’s appearances at conventions. “It’s always positive. The energy is contagious when you meet the fans. Kids are excited, adults are excited—it’s just a great atmosphere,” she said.

Van Dam is preparing for a busy Saturday full of signings at the Fisher’s Event Center, where fans will have a chance to meet the wrestling legend and grab a photo or autograph. “Right now, I’m looking forward to breakfast and then signing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. After that, we’ll be at the Royal Rumble as guests, but no spoilers on whether I’ll be stepping into the ring tonight!” he said.
