Selection Committee explains why IU misses out on March Madness

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — For the second straight season, the Indiana Hoosiers will not be a part of the NCAA Tournament.

The 19-13 Hoosiers were chosen as the second team out behind West Virginia, the University of North Carolina getting the ever-controversial last team in bid. IU’s only losses came against Quad 1 teams. The Hoosiers also beat Michigan State on the road and Purdue at Assembly Hall — both teams ranked at the time. IU’s win in East Lansing was the only game the Spartans lost on their home court this season.

Sunday, the selection committee — which meets every year in a Carmel hotel to lay out the bracket — discussed why they left the Hoosiers out, despite a strong final push to boost their resume before Selection Sunday.

“I’ll tell you, it was tough,” committee chairman Bubba Cunningham said. “Indiana didn’t have a single loss outside the first quadrant. They didn’t play that well in the challenging non-conference schedule, so the metrics were just slightly below the ones that ended up getting in.”

Cunningham said he was out of the room during the discussions on IU. He also serves as the director of athletics at UNC, so the conflict of interest prevented him from providing any opinion or vote on the final four teams who made the bracket.

Committee vice chair Keith Gill was in the room and shared more insight on the decision.

“To be honest with you, when you look at the opportunities that they had in the Quad 1 area, they didn’t take advantage of those opportunities in a way,” Gill said. “And their metrics were down relative to the teams that got into the field. That’s really what it came down to.”

By being left out of the NCAA Tournament, IU’s season officially comes to an end. The Hoosiers will reportedly decline any invitations to either the NIT Tournament or the new tournament in Las Vegas called The Crown.

Next on the agenda is finding the team’s next head coach as the Mike Woodson era is over in Bloomington.
