Pope Francis died Monday at age 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo announced.

Farrell said the pope passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time (1.35 a.m. ET).

Until a new pope is chosen, Farrell will be head of the Vatican, according to CNN.

Despite Francis being in poor health, he was at some Holy Week events at the Vatican and even met with Vice President J.D. Vance.

“I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis,” Vance wrote on the social media platform X. “My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.”
