New evacuation orders in Shelbyville; rivers face major flood stage

Heavy rainfall, flooding across central Indiana – 4/5/2025

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Multiple agencies in Shelbyville, Indiana, are evacuating areas due to rising water levels and major flooding.

Facing rising water levels, Shelbyville is evacuating:

  • Walkerville.
  • South side of the Big Blue River, including Indiana Avenue and Eastern Avenue.
  • Walnut Grove Campground off of London Road.

River Road is closed to all traffic.

Shelby County officials already issued a mandatory evacuation order for low-lying areas prone to flooding.

As of 6 p.m. Saturday, the Big Blue River measured 17.77 feet, nearing major flood stage (18.1 feet). It’s expected to crest overnight. The Little Blue River is currently in major flood stage, exceeding its historical crest of 12.9 feet.

“Our teams are doing everything possible to keep people safe, but we need the community’s help,” Shelbyville Fire Department Lieutenant Bradley Rund said in a statement. “If you’re in a flood-prone area, evacuate now. If you’re not in immediate danger, stay clear of flooded roadways and let our emergency responders do their work.”

Shelbyville first responders are working with Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on evacuations, which the city said was actively ongoing around 7:30 p.m.Saturday.

The Shelby County Fairgrounds is the official emergency evacuation site. It is located at 500 Frank St. in Shelbyville.

Sandbags are available outside the Shelbyville Street Department at 605 Hale Rd. on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out.
