Former first lady Melania Trump on Tuesday questioned the actions of law enforcement in connection with the July 13 assassination attempt on her husband.
“The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience. Now the silence around it is heavy,” she said in a video posted to X. “I can’t help but wonder, why did law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech?”
“There is definitely more to this story and we need to uncover the truth,” she concluded.
While holding a rally in Butler, Pa., Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the ear when Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire during his speech.
Trump made a full recovery and was able to attend the Republican National Convention without significant disruption to his schedule.
In a briefing to lawmakers, the FBI said that Crooks had been photographed as a suspicious person more than one hour before he fired his first shot and that Secret Service snipers had spotted him 20 minutes ahead of time.
A number of security failures have also come to light, including that Trump remained on stage despite the Secret Service monitoring an active threat.
