INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man attempting to evade arrest jumped into the White River in Anderson on Sunday evening, leading to a dramatic rescue by the Anderson Fire Department.
Sebastian Southerland, 30, from Hartford City, was pursued by state trooper after fleeing a traffic stop for speeding on I-69. The chase ended on 9th Street in Anderson, where Southerland abandoned his vehicle and jumped into the river, according to Indiana State Police.
State police say the chase began when Southerland was clocked at 89 mph in a 70 mph zone. Instead of stopping for the state trooper, Southerland exited the interstate onto State Road 32 and led police on a chase through Chesterfield and into Anderson.
Police say Southerland stopped his car at a dead-end street by the White River, left a female passenger in the vehicle, and ran towards the river.
Despite the high water levels and rapid current due to recent storms, Southerland jumped into the river and was swept downstream.
The Anderson Fire Department responded quickly for a water rescue. Southerland was found clinging to a pile of brush in the river and was pulled to safety. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
An Anderson firefighter was injured during the rescue but was treated and later released from the hospital.
Indiana State Police say Southerland was wanted on an active arrest warrant for dealing methamphetamine. He now faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest with a vehicle, resisting arrest causing injury, reckless driving, and operating while intoxicated.
Southerland remains under police supervision at the hospital.
