INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Due to an inspection that sparked a change of plans, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works will reconstruct the bridge over Little Eagle Creek on the west side.

Indy DPW announced Friday they will update their original plans to renovate the West Washington Street bridge over the creek. The department cites “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason behind the change.

After inspecting the bridge, over 70% of the arch and spandrel walls were found to be severely deteriorated. Indy DPW says those structures are crucial to the bridge’s stability.

As a result, the bridge will need to be demolished and replaced for traffic safety.

According to the press release, demolition could start as early as Jan. 3. The project will cost about $5 million to reconstruct the bridge while matching its historical elements.

In a statement, interim director Sam Beres said the department understands that construction can be disruptive.

“We are confident that the full reconstruction is in the best interest of public safety,” Beres said. “Additionally, we will be working with contractors to accelerate work wherever possible.”

During construction, Indy DPW urges people to use posted detours and avoid the area.

The bridge is expected to reopen this fall.
