IMPD seizes drugs & guns in arrest of wanted man

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man arrested for armed robbery faces new charges for the guns and drugs police say they found while searching his home and car.

Darrell Cole, 51, was arrested Friday for an armed robbery warrant, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and multiple drug-related charges, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced Tuesday.

In late January, robbery detectives asked the IMPD East District Violence Reduction Team for help locating Cole, who was wanted for a Jan. 2 robbery at an east side apartment complex.

IMPD says investigators “immediately went to work” and tracked Cole to an apartment building at 12th and Illinois Streets, just north of I-65.

“Officers observed Cole exit a vehicle and walk into his apartment building. When officers attempted to detain him, Cole refused officers’ lawful commands and a brief struggle ensued. Thankfully, no one was injured, and officers were eventually able to take Cole into custody. Following the struggle, a loaded handgun was found in his possession,” IMPD wrote on Facebook.

  • Approximately 31 grams (g) of suspected fentanyl
  • Approximately 8.2g of crack cocaine

Online court records show Cole faces 10 felony charges stemming from the Jan. 2 robbery and his subsequent arrest. He made his first court appearance Tuesday morning. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 23, with a jury trial set to start on April 24.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Cole remained in the Marion County Jail on a $160,000 surety bond. Online court records show he must be fitted with a GPS monitor before bonding out of jail.
