INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sammie Lou Books and B. Majors Publishing have officially partnered as Major Sammie to bring Indianapolis its first-ever Black Children’s Book Week.

Dana Bradford-Majors, founder of B. Majors Publishing, joined Daybreak to share more about the upcoming celebration and its significance.

Bradford-Majors, whose roots trace back to New Orleans, emphasized the importance of embracing diverse cultures in children’s literature. “I wanted to make sure that every single person has an opportunity to relate to what we talk about, especially when it comes to representing Black children in a positive, authentic light,” she said. “There’s so much value in showcasing different subcultures within diversity, and that’s something we can all learn from.”

The inspiration for Bradford-Majors’ first book came from a conversation with her young son. “I remember when my son, who was four at the time, wanted to jump in the bed, and I told him not to. He replied, ‘Mom, I’m trying to fly.’ That’s when I realized it: humans can’t fly… or can they? The story evolved into ‘Humans Can’t Fly,’ our first book and still our bestseller.”

Bradford-Majors also introduced other books from her collection, including “Hey, New Kid,” which helps children with their morning routines, and “Big Boys Aren’t Afraid of Outer Space,” a sequel to “Humans Can’t Fly.”

“It’s a bedtime story that takes kids on an imaginative journey to outer space as they prepare for bed,” she said about “Big Boys Aren’t Afraid of Outer Space.”

The idea for Black Children’s Book Week took shape during the pandemic when Bradford-Majors partnered with Erica Saunders to bring more visibility to Black children’s literature. “It’s incredibly exciting to be able to create this event in Indianapolis. Black Children’s Book Week is an opportunity for kids and families to experience stories that reflect their lives,” Bradford-Majors said.
