INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As lawmakers race legislative deadlines, they’re also honoring an Indiana-based national organization that focuses on one of the state’s important industries – agriculture.

In other words…

It’s FFA week at the Indiana Statehouse.

“FFA week is a wonderful opportunity for community members to learn more about the FFA organization and experience ag education and leadership development firsthand,” said Monrovia High School student Sienna Alexander in a comment provided to WISH-TV. Alexander serves as the Indiana FFA State Reporter.

“My fellow officers and I love this week because we get to travel across the state and meet new members while also learning about and participating in their FFA week traditions.”

The week includes a proclamation from Gov. Mike Braun and a Concurrent Resolution from both chambers of the General Assembly, recognizing the work of the organization and its educators and advisors in growing the next generation of people in the agriculture industry.

The statewide designation coincides with National FFA week, first held in 1948 when the organization (still called “Future Farmers of America” at the time and for many decades after) designated a honoring George Washington’s life and legacy.

According to FFA, the Indiana Association is preparing more than 14,000 members for more than 250 careers in the food, fiber and natural resource sectors.

FFA is headquartered on the northwest side in Indianapolis. The group’s annual convention is one of the largest annual events that downtown Indianapolis hosts each year.

Agriculture issues included in this year’s General Assembly include an increase of inspections at confined livestock farms and proposed restrictions on minnow fishing.
