American Heart Association has advocacy day at Indiana Statehouse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hoosiers on Monday advocated for school safety during an event at the Indiana Statehouse.

Advocates are pushing for a bill mandating that schools have automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, that can help save a person who goes into cardiac arrest. It’s an issue close to Christine Pasman, whose son suffered from cardiac arrest in gym class because of a heart condition.

Pasman said, “So, I’m here today because we need a plan. We have these AEDs everywhere. For example, I’m in the Statehouse but I have no idea where an AED is. So, we need plans. We need a plan for our children, I want to make sure your kids come home from school.”

The American Heart Association says it’s also lobbying for a bill that would require the state to create a statewide stroke registry.
