Hendricks County named top place in Indiana to raise a family

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana has 92 counties, but only one of them — Hendricks County — is Smart Asset’s best place in the state to raise a family.

Each year, personal finance company SmartAsset ranks the state’s counties based on four factors: housing equity, academic performance, childcare costs, and access to recreation and community centers. The highest-ranking counties in the scoring were SmartAsset’s best places to raise a family.

Hendricks County: The Top Destination for Families

Hendricks County, located just west of Indianapolis, claimed the top spot in the 2025 rankings thanks to high marks in all four categories. SmartAsset notes that Hendricks County benefits from proximity to Indianapolis, has a high standard of living, and offers a mix of suburban and rural living, making it appealing to a wide range of families.

  • Housing Equity: Over the last five years, home values increased by 52.7%, which signals a strong housing market.
  • Academic Performance: Hendricks County rates No. 1 in the state for standardized test scores in math and reading/language arts proficiencies, showing a countywide commitment to academic excellence.
  • Recreation and Community Centers: Hendricks County offers residents ample access to community and rec centers, ranking No. 4 in the state with 0.59 centers per 1,000 residents. This abundance of community spaces offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities and family bonding.
  • Childcare Costs: SmartAsset found that childcare costs in Hendricks County averaged $123, which is in line with other parts of the Indy metro.

Meanwhile, Marion County ranked near the bottom (87th) for family-friendliness. The county ranked at the bottom for academic performance and placed mid-pack for childcare costs. However, it ranked No. 14 in housing equity, demonstrating a 59.7% increase in home values over the last five years.

Monroe County shines in survey

Another county that performed well on SmartAsset’s survey was Monroe County, home of Indiana University.

SmartAsset’s ranking considers multiple factors that contribute to a high quality of life for families. Monroe County excels in several key areas:

  • Housing Equity: Over the last five years, home values in Monroe County increased by 45.4%, which signals a strong housing market. While the county ranked 85th in terms of housing growth, its overall value as a family destination remains high.
  • Academic Performance: Monroe County ranks seventh in the state for standardized test scores in math and reading/language arts. With top-performing schools, parents can feel confident in the educational opportunities for their children.
  • Recreation and Community Centers: Monroe County is home to a strong selection of recreational facilities and community centers, ranking 16th in the state for centers per 1,000 residents. This abundance of community spaces offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities and family bonding.
  • Childcare Costs: Though Monroe County ranked 53rd for childcare costs, the state of Indiana overall has many affordable childcare options, particularly in more rural areas. This makes it easier for families to balance work and home life.

Monroe County’s high ranking in SmartAsset’s study reflects the area’s strong educational system, affordable housing market, and recreational opportunities. While some of Indiana’s other counties ranked lower, SmartAsset found that the state overall offers a welcoming environment for families seeking a balance between work, recreation, and community.

Other Rankings

Several neighboring counties to Monroe performed differently on the SmartAsset scale. Brown County ranked 19th, while Owen County came in 37th. However, other counties bordering Monroe are in the bottom half of the rankings:

  • Decatur: 22nd
  • LaGrange: 30th
  • Greene: 54th
  • Morgan: 57th
  • Lawrence: 66th
  • St. Joseph: 72nd
  • Jackson: 84th
  • Ohio: 90th

These counties also ranked lower nationally, but their rural charm and close-knit communities continue to attract those looking for quieter, slower-paced living.
