George Washington High School to honor George McGinnis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — George Washington High School will rename their gymnasium to honor George McGinnis, who played at George Washington and led them to a state championship in 1969.

George Washington went 31-0 that season. McGinnis was named Indiana Mr. Basketball that year.

“McGinnis wasn’t just a basketball icon, but he was a role model and an inspiration to countless young athletes in Indianapolis, shaping the city’s basketball culture for decades,” George Washington principal Dr. Stan Law said in a statement.. “From the halls of George Washington High School to the basketball court in Assembly Hall during his incredible freshman year at Indiana University, and throughout his Hall of Fame ABA and NBA career including with his hometown Indiana Pacers, George McGinnis exemplified what it means to be a teammate, a citizen, and a human being.”

The ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. on February 20 before the boys varsity basketball game against Shortridge.

McGinnis went on to have a Hall of Fame career in the NBA. He played seven seasons with the Pacers and is one of only four Pacers players to have their name in the rafters of Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

He won two ABA championships with the Pacers and was the ABA MVP in the 1974-75 season.

McGinnis also played one season at Indiana University in college, where he led the Big Ten in both scoring (30 points per game) and rebounding (14.7 rebounds per game). He played at IU the year before they hired Bob Knight.
