Former GOP Rep. George Santos is asking President Trump for clemency or commutation of his seven-year prison sentence for wire fraud and identity theft.

“I’ll take a commutation, clemency, whatever the president is willing to give me,” Santos told British media personality Piers Morgan on Thursday. “Seven years and three months in prison for a first-time offender over campaign matters just screams ‘over the top,’ and I would appreciate if the president would consider.”

Santos, of New York, also said he is going to send paperwork formally requesting the White House’s intervention in his sentencing before he goes to prison in July.

“I do believe this is an unfair judgment handed down to me,” Santos said. “I think there was a lot of politicization over the process.”

Santos, who was expected to ask Trump for such relief, was elected in 2022 and expelled from the House  in 2023 as he faced ethics charges following evidence showing that he lied during his campaign about his background.

Santos criticized former Biden administration Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday for what he thinks is the “weaponizing” of the Justice Department.

“Merrick Garland was by far the most disgraceful and disgraced political [attorney general] to ever serve in that capacity of the United States,” he said.
