INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 30-year-old Anderson man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.

Jonathan Jerald Ashley Jr. got caught after he crashed the vehicle he was driving on Oct. 22, 2023, near the intersection of 20th and Noble streets. That’s in a residential area a few blocks south of State Road 32 between the downtown area and State Road 9.

At the crash, an Anderson Police Department officer determined Ashley was “heavily intoxicated,” said a news release issued Friday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis.

During a search of Ashley, officers found a loaded Glock handgun. His felony convictions of domestic battery, resisting law enforcement, invasion of privacy, dealing in hydrocodone, and pointing a firearm had prohibited him from ever legally possessing a firearm again.

The drug charge came after an Anderson police officer shot Ashley in January 2019 during the raid of an apartment.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office does not allow jail booking photos of suspects or convicts to be shared publicly.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Anderson Police Department investigated the case, and U.S. District Judge James P. Hanlon sentenced Ashley.
