Elizabethtown Asst. Fire Chief arrested for OWI, police say he was responding to a fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Assistant Fire Chief from Elizabethtown Ind. was arrested Sunday evening for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, according to a press release.

Sheriff deputies were dispatched to the 12000 block of East Legal Tender Road for reports of a single vehicle accident.

67-year-old Thomas Nienaber was found entrapped in an Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department pickup truck, which was found on its side in a driveway.

Responding fire department personnel were able to extract Nienaber from the vehicle.

Witnesses told police the department truck was driving with activated lights and sirens before it left the roadway and rolled onto its side. Police believe Nienaber was responding to a structure fire when the accident occurred.

During the crash investigation, police say they found evidence of alcohol impairment and Nienaber was suspected of being intoxicated. He was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw and was arrested on a charge of OWI.

Nienaber posted bond and was released.
