  • Governor Braun has signed two new executive orders on gender. One bans transgender women from competing in women’s college sports; the other defines state policies on gender – requiring state agencies to only recognize male and female – removing non-binary options on drivers licenses and other applications.
  • An updated version of Indiana’s ‘buffer law’ is on its way to the full state Senate. The chamber’s committee on Corrections and Criminal law passed it Tuesday. The original law made it illegal to be within 25 feet of an officer while they are doing the job. A federal judge ruled it unconstitutional. The new version says it’s only a violation if an officer ‘reasonably believes’ the person is interfering with the officer’s duties.
  • President Donald Trump has delivered his second term’s first speech to a joint session of Congress. He vowed last night to keep up what he described as “swift and unrelenting action” to reorient America’s economy, immigration and foreign policy. Democratic lawmakers registered their dissent with muted reactions, placards calling out lies, and one legislator’s ejection.
  • Trump’s trade war with Mexico, Canada and China is drawing immediate retaliation. The U.S. imposed 25% taxes on imports from north and south of the border – and a 20% tariff on items from China. China has retaliated with tariffs of up to 15% on a wide array of U.S. farm exports. Canada planned to put tariffs on more than $100 billion of American goods. Several published reports this morning suggest deals with Canada and Mexico may come swiftly.
  • The Pacers head south with some momentum. They beat the Rockets in Indianapolis last night – as Tyrese Haliburton’s hot hand stayed scorching. He poured in 28 points with 15 assists – on the way to a 115-102 victory. Next up: two games against the Hawks in Atlanta.
  • LeBron James has reached another career milestone. The Lakers star’s first point of the game against the Pelicans last night gave him 50,000 for his career, when the regular season and playoffs are combined. For perspective: no other player comes within 5,000 points of that milestone.
