Get married in downtown Indy for a good cause
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — If you want to get married on Valentine’s Day and help a good cause, you can do that Friday in downtown Indianapolis.
The Marion County Clerk’s Office, located inside the City-County Building, is performing wedding ceremonies to raise money for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign.
The wedding celebrations began at 9 a.m. this morning and will run until 3 p.m. There is limited availability and couples are encouraged to make a reservation to get hitched or renew their vows. Ceremonies for walk-in couples will be performed as time allows.
“We have 72 couples already set up which is a record,” Dan Goldblatt, director of policy and communication for the clerk’s office, said Friday on Daybreak. “Last year we did about 60, plus we have walk ins so we may have more than 100 couples that are going to tie the knot today.”
Goldblatt says Valentine’s Day is always a very special day in the Clerk’s office.
“We get all these people together, we have these judges that come together, we decorate the place up, we really want to make it fun.”
Goldblatt says a ceremony at the clerk’s office is not a exactly a “typical” wedding.
“It’s a pretty simple ceremony. It last between 5-15 minutes, generally. People can bring friends and family — don’t bring 200 people, but bring a handful of people or come as the happy couple yourself.”
In lieu of an officiant’s fee, there is a minimum $50 contribution to the American Heart Association to benefit the Go Red for Women campaign. The goal this year is to raise $4,000.
Couples must present a valid marriage license to be married on Valentine’s Day.
The marriage license fee is $25 for Marion County residents. Hoosier couples living outside Marion County should apply for their license in their home county, even if they intend to marry in Indianapolis. The marriage license fee for out-of-state residents is $65.
