Athlete of the Week: Maddie Engle
NEW PALESTINE, Ind. (WISH) — New Palestine softball was one step away from winning a state championship last year. The Dragons lost to Hamilton Southeastern in the 4A title, 2-1.
They once again have high expectations this year, with Maddie Engle at the forefront.
Engle hit nearly .400 last season and is committed play play at IU.
“She loves the game,” New Palestine softball coach Ed Marcum said. “She loves to play. She plays hard, plays smart, and she’s a unique player because she can play everywhere. Her best position is probably catcher. Not many catchers can play center field as well.”
Engle is one of the leaders on this year’s team, and she learned from the seniors from the past three years.
“I finally got to take stuff from this role and just be able to just fall into that position,” Engle said. “And I’m vocal when I have to be and leader by example most of the time, I would think.”
Engle said playing with the girls on this team is a dream come true.
“I literally love being with these girls,” Engle said. “They’re great. I mean, over there, they’re having a blast. And we’re just warming up. So it’s great. All of them have great personalities and they’re just a great team to be around. The seniors have really come together to make this team what it is, and it’s just awesome.”
New Palestine is off to a 2-0 start to the season, beating Eastern Hancock and Triton Central, both 10-0. The Dragons get back on the field on Thursday against Avon.
