82-year-old pilot dies in experimental plane crash in rural Henry County

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Ind. (WISH) — A pilot died in a plane crash Tuesday afternoon in rural Henry County, Indiana State Police say.

Sgt. Scott Keegan with state police says the pilot was an 82-year-old Middletown man. His named was not being publicly shared.

Keegan said from the crash site that an experimental plane crashed around 2 p.m. Tuesday on a field near U.S. 36. and County Road 200 West.

News 8’s Kevin Stinson is at the scene, which is off County Road 200 West about a half-mile south of U.S. 36. That’s in rural Henry County about a mile east of the town of Sulphur Springs, and about a 12-minute drive northwest of downtown New Castle, the county seat.

Investigators think the crash happened at takeoff when westbound on Roberts airstrip, a small airstrip with limited access, Keegan said. The sergeant did not know if the airstrip is associated with a nearby business of the same name.

Keegan said the Federal Aviation Administration was called to the scene. However, the National Transportation Safety Board is usually the one that is sent to plane crash scenes.

Sulphur Springs is about a 70-minute drive northeast of downtown Indianapolis.

On Friday morning, a plane crash in neighboring Madison County killed four people.
