IFD was called to 2248 Sheldon St., near Frederick Douglas Park, around 9:57 a.m. for a house fire. The original call for IFD came in saying there was heavy fire from the back of the home.

Heavy smoke flowed through the home. IFD says the family who lived there was not home at the time of the fire.

Cold and scared, eight puppies and their mother huddled in the basement, IFD said.

Firefighters rescued the dogs and they immediately began moving again. IFD credits the dogs being in the basement as what saved their lives.

The fire is still under investigation, but IFD believes it either started in the back bedroom or outside in the backyard.
